The Dutch inner-city shopping areas face a decreasing number of visitors and declining sales volumes. Ecommerce, changing consumer behaviour, and aging are considered to be the main causes. Improving the experience in inner-city shopping areas may be a solution to attract more visitors. This research focuses on improving the atmospherics in inner-city shopping areas. More specifically, the main objective of this study was to empirically determine which atmospheric characteristics contribute to the shopper’s appreciation of inner-city shopping areas.
